Bitcoin Slips After Hot US Inflation Data as Evernorth Rings Nasdaq Bell With 473M XRP

Inflation Surprise Hits Bitcoin

The September Consumer Price Index report, released at 8:30 a.m. ET, came in hotter than markets had expected. Treasury yields jumped immediately, and risk assets sold off. Bitcoin had been trading near $83,800 just before the release and slipped by more than $1,000 to roughly $82,900. Ether briefly lost the $2,500 level and traded near $2,480.

Derivatives markets felt the move most. Market data showed about $162 million in futures liquidations within a day, with long positions accounting for roughly two-thirds of the total. The reaction was sharp but short of a full-scale rout, which suggests that traders had already been positioning cautiously ahead of the data.

The report matters because it feeds directly into expectations for the Federal Reserve. Several Fed officials had already signaled this week that further tightening remains possible, and a firm inflation print strengthens that case. Higher-for-longer rates tend to weigh on speculative assets, including crypto.

Spot ETF Demand Provides a Counterweight

Not all the news was negative. US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds attracted about $175.6 million in net inflows on Monday, the first inflow day of the week, led by Fidelity and BlackRock products. Spot Ether funds also recorded inflows, ending a long streak of outflows. Still, the broader trend since early October has been net selling, which left buyers exposed when the inflation data arrived.

Evernorth Brings an XRP Treasury to Nasdaq

Away from the macro noise, Evernorth Holdings, a Ripple-backed company, began trading on Nasdaq on October 12 under the ticker XRPN. It reached the market through a merger with the special purpose acquisition company Armada Acquisition Corp. II and holds approximately 473 million XRP, along with about $300 million in gross cash proceeds.

Shares jumped by more than 13% during the first session before closing modestly higher. Evernorth planned to ring the Nasdaq closing bell on October 14 to mark the debut. The company also named a former Coinbase Asset Management executive as chief investment officer to oversee treasury strategy.

Investors should note one important distinction: buying XRPN means owning shares in a company, not holding XRP directly. The stock is a treasury vehicle, not a spot ETF, and its value will reflect both XRP's price and management's ability to generate yield from its holdings.

What to Watch Next

Traders now turn to the Federal Reserve's Beige Book, upcoming producer price data and the central bank's policy meeting later this month. For crypto, the key question is whether institutional channels such as ETFs and public treasury companies can keep absorbing volatility if inflation stays stubborn.
