Bitcoin Slips Toward $81K as Hawkish Fed Signals Collide With Stablecoin Accounting Push

Bitcoin Retreats as Rate Fears Return
The trigger was macro, not crypto. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack struck a hawkish tone, strengthening expectations of another rate hike before year-end. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield stayed above 5%, while oil climbed to its highest level in nearly a month on Middle East supply concerns. Technology and memory-chip stocks also declined, adding to the risk-off mood.
Leverage Gets Flushed Out
Derivatives amplified the move. Total crypto liquidations reached about $672 million over 24 hours, and roughly $586 million of that came from long positions. Altcoins fell harder than Bitcoin, with BOME down more than 30% and ENA and NEAR each losing over 13%.
Traders now look to the $82,400–$82,800 resistance zone and the $81,000–$81,200 support area as the key short-term levels.
Data That Could Move the Market
The next catalysts are close. A speech by Fed Governor Christopher Waller and earnings from Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan arrive today. September CPI follows on Wednesday, and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is due to speak on Friday at the IMF annual meetings. A hotter inflation print would likely reinforce rate-hike bets and keep pressure on Bitcoin.
Stablecoins Edge Closer to Corporate Treasuries
Beneath the volatility, U.S. market structure continues to evolve. The Financial Accounting Standards Board has proposed guidance clarifying when certain stablecoins can qualify as cash equivalents under U.S. GAAP. The proposal does not change the definition of cash equivalents or approve stablecoins outright. It adds illustrative examples and would require companies to disclose the significant components of their cash equivalents. Public comments are open until November 19.
If finalized, the rules could remove an accounting barrier for companies using stablecoins in payments and treasury management, though adoption will still depend on redemption terms and compliance standards.
Tokenized Equities Gain Traction
Wall Street is moving in the same direction. Weekly decentralized exchange volume for tokenized stocks has risen 447% since Robinhood Chain launched in July, and Morgan Stanley plans to support tokenized equities on an alternative trading system in the first quarter of 2027.
What It Means for Investors
Short-term price action remains tied to inflation data and Fed policy. Longer term, accounting clarity for stablecoins and growing tokenization suggest that institutional adoption is moving ahead regardless of near-term swings.
